Ford will stop selling the Fiesta in 2023 and start making the all-electric Explorer and Capri crossovers at its facility in Cologne, Germany. These cars cost almost twice as much as gasoline-powered superminis, so the Puma is now Ford’s cheapest car.

Ford is shutting down its facility in Saarlouis, Germany, and the Focus will stop being made in November. This means that the company’s portfolio is, on average, significantly more expensive than it has ever been in its 122-year existence.
Over the next several years, the company’s European division will be dramatically redesigned. The goal is to make it a mass-market volume player again, competing for the top spot in sales in the region. The company will also enhance its electric car sales mix by adding cheaper models.

New Ford Focus SUV Model

Ford hasn’t yet announced which of Kuga’s current mild, full, or plug-in hybrid powertrains will be available in the next vehicle. One possible addition is a range-extender (REx) system. Last year, Ford said it was working on REx technology for SUVs and pickups because demand for all-electric vehicles in those sectors was declining.
The new vehicle needs to be very different from the Kuga, the electric-powered Explorer, and the Capri crossovers, regardless of its powertrain.
One method to give this new car a distinct place in the market would be to provide a variety of powertrains. However, the new crossover may be far cheaper than those versions.
Ford needs to produce additional electric cars that cost less than the £40,000 Explorer to reduce emissions from its fleet and gain greater market share. The new electric Puma Gen-E, which costs about £26,000, helped Ford’s UK electric vehicle sales climb by 324% year-on-year in the first half of 2025. This shows how important it is to keep prices low in every sector.
The electric Puma and the Explorer are about £14,000 apart right now. The new crossover is expected to come out around this time, making it a competitor to some of Europe’s best-selling cars, like the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tucson, which start at around £30,000.
It was not realistic to think that Ford could go back to the golden days of the mid-1990s, when the Escort, Fiesta, and Mondeo were all very popular and the company had about 12% of the European market.
