Ford’s new off-road-capable Bronco signals the brand’s new focus on off-grid adventure, but its bread and butter Escape crossover still caters to the family-car crowd on the road. All-wheel drive is available, but the Escape lacks the sophisticated off-road gear of its new, bigger, stable go-anywhere companion. Four different powertrains are offered, including optional hybrid and plug-in hybrid configurations, which aim to absorb fuel and provide an additional electrical boost when needed. The Escape’s sleek cabin matches its smooth-edged exterior styling, but the more affordable models project an air of low-cost that may put some buyers off. Despite its flaws, the Escape is still a decent option for compact SUV buyers, but competitors like the Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan offer more refinement, better fittings, and more driving pleasure for a similar price.
