2024 Ford Focus a family car that experienced a corporate resurgence in the 1990s and became synonymous with fun-to-drive family vehicles, will be discontinued in 2025 due to Ford’s switch to electric cars. Ford announced it would stop car production at its Saarlouis, Germany plant, where the Focus is currently manufactured. Saarlouis is in the process of producing Ford’s next iteration of electric vehicles, but Valencia, Spain, won the contract.
We have no additional models planned for Saarlouis, Ford Europe chairman Stuart Rowley told reporters, adding that the company is exploring “other opportunities” for the facility, including selling it to other automakers. Some of the employees may be transferred to Ford’s other German plant in Cologne, which is slated to start production of a new crossover based on Volkswagen’s MEB electric architecture in 2023. According to Automotive News, there are currently 4,600 people employed at Saarlouis.
Despite winning the contract to manufacture Ford’s next-generation electric vehicles, Ford has warned Valencia that it anticipates reducing its workforce. The Spanish facilities that produce the Kuga crossover minivan, S-Max and Galaxy, and Transit Connect employ about 6,000 people. Ford will retire the once-popular family sedans and estates in spring 2022 as a result of declining sales and the growing popularity of crossovers.
The Mondeo badge has been a staple in European Ford showrooms for nearly three decades, but Ford has repeatedly shown it isn’t sentimental. The company abandoned the three-decade-old Escort moniker in 1998 when it introduced the new model, opting for the name Focus to emphasize a radical change from the previous model.
2024 Ford Focus Review
The European plant that makes the Ford Focus is likely to close in 2025, and it’s unclear whether the once-in-demand model lineup will be replaced. Overnight Ford announced its plant in Valencia, Spain, had won an internal bidding war against the Saarlouis plant, in Germany, for the right to “assemble vehicles based on electric vehicle architecture next generation”.
Thus Saarlouis will continue to make Focus until 2025, after which it is likely to be closed or sold with the automaker stating it is “evaluating options for the concept of a masa site front”. Stuart Rowley, chairman of Ford Europe, told Automotive News and other outlets were considering “alternative opportunities for vehicle production in Saarlouis, including other manufacturers”.
The company says its European passenger car lineup will be fully electric by 2030. By 2024, the European Ford range will have four EV passenger cars: the Puma EV, the already-released Mustang Mach-E, and a Cologne-made midsize and sports crossover based on the Volkswagen MEB architecture. Ford has not announced which EVs or types of vehicles will be produced at the Valencia plant, which currently produces the Kuga/Escape, Transit Connect, Galaxy, and S-Max.
It is quite possible that the company can produce C-segment EVs in Valencia. The company might even decide to implement the Name Focus on the car, given the fun-to-drive reputation and name recognition of the signboard. Or Ford Europe could choose to focus sorry on crossovers and commercial vehicles. Blue Oval has made such a transition in the U.S., where the Mustang is the only vehicle available that is not a pickup truck, SUV, van, or crossover.
Even if the Focus name is left in Europe, it is likely to live elsewhere with the current generation of cars also produced in China and Taiwan. Ford China’s arms have a recent form in developing new models to carry on the legacy of discontinued models in other markets. In recent years, Ford China has developed a new generation of Mondeo, Taurus, and Escort for sale there and in certain export markets.
2024 Ford Focus News
The Focus was launched in Europe in 1998 and effectively replaced the Escort, which in the 1990s featured a bland style, that only accountants who cut costs would be proud of, and the dynamics of somnambulant. With a radical New Edge style and well-tuned handling by the late Richard Parry-Jones, Focus managed to captivate buyers and a fourth owner.
Although the small passenger car segment has shrunk in recent years as buyers flock to crossovers, it still accounts for a significant share of sales both here and in Europe. Until the last few years, the Focus has regularly become one of Ford’s best-selling vehicles in Europe, but the star of the model has faded by overtaking Puma and Kuga in 2021. The decline in sales has forced Ford to reduce its focus on production and release factory workers.
Locally focus replaced the Mazda 323-based Laser in 2002, but sales lag far behind the then-dominant Falcon and the more recent Ranger. Ford Australia has progressively trimmed the local Focus lineup since the launch of the current fourth-generation model.
Recently he lost the ST-Line and Active hatchback models, leaving only the ST and ST-X hot hatches that are not currently on sale due to a shortage of chips delaying the launch of the facelifted model.
New 2024 Ford Focus Report
Alternatively, Ford could choose to apply the Focus nameplate to the upcoming “all-electric volume passenger vehicle” confirmed for production in Cologne, Germany by 2023 – it is widely rumored to be based on Volkswagen’s MEB modular electric platform – which will see the Electric Focus sold in a showroom with its combustion-engined brother Saarlouis, made in Germany.
Meanwhile, Ford Australia has committed to introducing “at least five” local electrified models by the end of 2024, with a mix for the “most” consisting of all-electric vehicles – suggests at least three EVs for local showrooms, including an E-Transit van due in mid-2022.
Whether the electric Focus will make the list remains to be seen, given the Blue Oval’s local arm recently trimmed the ‘standard’ ST-Line and the current Active version of the Focus for 2022 – following slowing sales and a shrinking small car segment – leaving the ST and ST X hot hatch as the only Focus variants still on offer in Australia.
All-Electric Ford Focus 2024
The nameplate of the Ford Focus small car will switch to electric power in the coming years – according to foreign reports – as Ford’s European division will ditch petrol and diesel power by the end of this decade. British publication Autocar reports plans for an electric version of Ford’s small car are going well.
In Autocar’s interview with Ford Europe chief designer Murat Guler, he said: “Everyone is launching electric cars and we will launch some in the future.” “We looked at everything: proportions, architecture … we’re really busy designing all the next-generation cars. There’s a lot of work going on.”

Little more is known about the new model – which could wear the E-Focus or Focus Electric brands, following Ford’s naming conventions of the past and present – although Autocar notes the electric hatch is likely to be launched “in the coming years”.
Ford fans will note the mid-2020s model won’t be the first zero-emission Focus ever made, as the modestly named Focus Electric was offered in the US from 2011 to 2018 (based on the third generation model), pairing a 107kW electric motor with a 33.5kWh battery (from 2017 onwards) for a claimed mileage of only 185km.

2024 Ford Focus Release Date
With the end of the current Focus expected in 2024 or 2025, and Ford Europe’s commitment to shift the entire range of cars and SUVs to plug-in hybrid or electric power by the middle of the year By 2026, it’s likely the electric Focus will arrive for the fifth generation of the signage – thus meaning the end of pure gasoline or diesel power.
