2023 Ford Expedition Review
It’s always quite meaningful when a vehicle is driven smaller than it actually is, especially when the vehicle is a very large full-size SUV. The Ford Expedition does just that, moving with a smoothness that belies its body-on-frame construction and sizable proportions.
Accurate steering makes it feel nimble, and ride quality is generally smooth and quiet. The twin-turbo V-6 is responsive, winches admirably, and does a good job of matching the power output of some V-8 engines, despite getting V-8-like fuel economy despite its relatively small displacement.
The added enhancements for 2022 refresh the Expedition’s interior nicely. While the available size of the 15.5-inch infotainment touchscreen is impressive, our experience with it leads us to think that the smaller standard 12.0-inch unit is better.
Either way, passengers in each row can stay comfortable and busy with air vents, cupholders, and USB ports. There’s plenty of space, even in the third row, but some of the newer competitors give it more interior capacity.
Revealed for 2018, this generation of the Expedition is starting to look a little familiar, but Ford is trying to keep it fresh with cool specs and impressive technology. Considering its good driving style, diverse capabilities, and commendable safety score, the Expedition remains highly ranked among full-size three-row SUVs.

The expedition made full use of its interior space. It’s roomier than the Chevy Tahoe and gives each passenger plenty of room and comfort. The accessibility of the third row is impressive, allowing even adults to get in and out with less effort than it would take to sit in the second row.
The center console is a bit heavy on buttons. It’s not immediately user-friendly, but it doesn’t take too much time to master. It’s a simpler layout than the Tahoe, too. The large windshield pillars hamper visibility from the front.
But even though the rear window looks far away, the clear backup camera and available 360-degree camera system eliminate excess backup.
The Ford Sync infotainment system has come a long way over the years, and the latest iteration is quite user-friendly. The navigation system does look a bit dated but offers pinch-to-zoom functionality, helping to make it quick and easy to use. Our test vehicle’s 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system put the Expedition’s large cab to good use, providing power and clarity.
Basic voice control and can help with simple functions. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration systems come standard with wireless connectivity. The Expedition’s advanced driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control, function well but lack the full range of features found on some rival SUVs.
Expeditions have a registered cargo capacity of 20.9 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 104.6 cubic feet. That’s less space than its direct rival, the Chevy Tahoe.
But the Expedition’s extra room for all your knick-knacks, plus its flexible seating arrangements, more than compensate.
The expedition is also a great vehicle for transporting small children. It has easily accessible anchorages for safety seats plus plenty of room to load rear-facing seats. Towing capacity is excellent with a maximum capacity of 9,300 pounds when properly equipped.
As standard, the Expedition is equipped with a 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. If that’s not big enough, a 15.5-inch unit is included on the higher-end trims. Both come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; built-in navigation is offered on a subscription basis.

2023 Ford Expedition Engine
We were impressed by the V6’s muscle tone. Any SUV this big can’t be this fast, right? We tested the Expedition Platinum with 4WD, and it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. That’s almost a second faster than a comparable Chevy Tahoe.
The Expedition is responsive and easy to ride when you don’t bury the accelerator in the ground either.
The brake pedal is a little slippery the first time you press it, but it’s easy enough to come to a smooth stop eventually, which is the important part. The steering is light and helps make the Expedition feel a little less wide.
While you likely won’t drive your Expedition with Secret Service-like urgency, there are some pretty admirable qualities here for an SUV of such size. It’s not a Mercedes GLS, but it doesn’t feel out of place.
The Expedition’s front seats are comfortable and comfortable. They have multiple lumbar support zones and even have a massage function on higher trims. The second-row seats are also quite soft. The third row of seats is sturdy but still adequate for adult use. The Expedition’s ride quality is also quite smooth.
We were less than impressed with the Expedition’s climate control. The airflow from the vents is noisy and not very strong. The seat heaters may also disappoint if you really want heat. On the bright side, Expeditions is very quiet on the roads and around town.
Each Expedition is powered by a 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged V-6. It is linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission, with RWD standard and 4WD available. The engine produces 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque as standard, but in Timberline and Stealth Edition trims, it is tuned for up to 440 hp and 510 lb-ft.
In our model test with the standard output engine and 4WD, 0-60 mph acceleration ranged from 6.2 to 6.9 seconds, with the longer time being that of the larger Max version. The Timberline model we tested hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds.
If fuel economy for the 2023 Expedition is similar to previous years, it should be around 17/23 mpg city/highway with RWD, and 16/22 mpg with 4WD. Expect the Max model to be slightly less efficient. Also, the 2022 Timberline Explorer is rated at 15/19 mpg.
Ford Expedition MPG
Expeditions get an EPA estimate of 19 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That’s similar to what the EPA has posted for other large SUVs. But we had trouble matching the EPA numbers in our real-world tests.
Another thing to consider is that premium fuel is required to get the quoted power figures. During our use of the Expedition, we could see the difference in performance between regular and premium fuel.
BlueCruise is Ford’s Level 2 driver assistance technology that enables hands-free driving and is being added to Expedition for 2022. On pre-mapped stretches of highways, dubbed Blue Zones, BlueCruise lets drivers take their hands off the wheel and their feet off the pedals, allowing the vehicle to move forward. driving.
Onboard sensors monitor the driver to ensure they keep their eyes on the road ahead. Currently, the BlueCruise is only available in the range’s top Expedition Platinum trim, but it may eventually trickle down to others in the range.

For a different type of gig, Expedition Timberline is available. The model enhances the SUV’s off-road capabilities via tough all-terrain tires, trail-tuned suspension that increases ride height, metal skid plates borrowed from the F-150 Raptor, and trail turn assist from the Bronco.
The Timberline engine also produces 440 hp. It looks the part too, featuring a roof rack, orange trim details, black wheels, and stylish green interior upholstery.
