The fourth-generation Expedition has one engine, the 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6, although Ford offers two outlets.
The entry-level model produces 375 horsepower (279 kilowatts) and 470 pound-feet (637 Newton-meters) of torque. The increased horsepower is 400 hp (298 kW) and 480 pound-feet (650 Nm).
A 10-speed automatic gearbox is standard equipment for both horsepower ratings and is not expected to change the output.
The Expedition 2022 is expected to receive the hybrid powertrain the automaker introduced for the 2021 F-150.
Inside, the Expedition will likely get an improved infotainment system, which could see the in-dash display replaced with a similar tablet style to the one Ford introduced at Mach-E.
This will be a significant interior upgrade, albeit a necessary one as large information displays continue to proliferate throughout the industry.
The updated Ford Expedition, which will arrive for the 2022 model year, will make its debut later this year alongside the updated Lincoln Navigator.
2022 Ford Expedition Refresh Timberline
We take a look at the interiors of the Expedition 2022 and Lincoln Navigator, giving us a first look at the infotainment updates that will be coming to both.
The Ford Expedition 2022 and Lincoln Navigator both appear to be getting an update to their infotainment systems, with Expeditions (above) to feature the Mustang Mach-E’s 15.5-inch infotainment screen.
Expedition 2022 photos reveal that it will have a rougher trim, perhaps called a 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline.
Navigator’s horizontally oriented infotainment screen has not changed, but it could have gotten bigger.
Ford’s full-size SUV is arriving at a mid-cycle refresh, and spy photos from Expedition 2022 and Lincoln Navigator show that the infotainment system in every SUV is undergoing an overhaul.
Upcoming expeditions appear to be getting a large vertical display from the Mach-E Mustang – which stretches 15.5 inches at the EV – and the Navigator will keep its screen-oriented horizontally, but it looks like it will be a little bigger.
The Expedition, which will be upgraded from the current standard 8.0-inch infotainment screen, will be the first vehicle in Ford’s lineup to be setup seen on Mach-E. Mach-E unveils Ford’s latest Sync 4 infotainment system, capable of over-the-air updates.
The infotainment system has only one knob at the bottom of the screen; the Expeditions photo shows the same setup, plus the addition of four buttons at the bottom end of the screen.
From the photos, it doesn’t appear that the Navigator will get the same update as the Expedition, but the 10.0-inch screen on the 2021 model looks set to see an increase in size for next year.
Expeditions’ exterior images also show that the rough trim that has been seen on the upcoming Explorer – which is believed by several news outlets, including C / D, named Timberline – could also be added to the Expedition.
In the spy photo, Expedition 2022 rode all-terrain tires and might as well get slip plates, as we’ve seen in the Explorer Timberline additions saw.
We don’t expect any mechanical changes to the Expedition Timberline, but lifting the suspension from the current 9.8 inches is possible.
2022 Expedition Changes
The full-size SUV segment heats up as GM has launched redesigned versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade.
If that’s not exciting enough, Jeep will enter the segment with the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.
To take on the new and redesigned competition, Ford and Lincoln are working on a facelifted version of the Expedition and Navigator.
Starting with the Blue Oval, the Expedition 2022 will feature an updated fascia and a more high-tech interior.
Camouflage does a great job of hiding exterior changes, but we can expect a revised grille, modified lighting unit, and new bumpers.
The spy photographer also took photos of what is believed to be the new Timberline trim. Designed to fight against the GMC Yukon AT4, this model features a sturdier exterior with a bumper that maximizes approach and departure angles.
The SUV is also equipped with an increased ride height, dual exhaust system, and dark wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler rubber.
The exterior looks evolutionary, but the cabin will get high-tech changes thanks to the infotainment system sourced from the Mustang Mach-E.
It features a portrait orientation and a screen that is likely to be 15.5 inches in size.
Elsewhere, we can see a revised digital instrument cluster and dashboard with new air vents. This model also seems to adopt a new steering wheel and the familiar center console.
The Lincoln Navigator 2022 will receive a minor refresh that appears to include a new front fascia with revamped headlamps and repositioned fog lamps. The back is also camouflaged, but the changes are less noticeable.
While the interior is very closed, it looks like the Navigator will adopt a new infotainment system with a bigger display.
That’s probably a good move as the current 10-inch infotainment system is dwarfed by the Escalade’s 16.9-inch display.
Under the hood, we can expect a 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 engine. It currently produces between 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) and 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS), depending on the model and trim.
However, it may not be the only engine as reports suggest the SUV could offer the V6 EcoBoost 3.5-liter hybrid from the 2021 F-150.
It produces 430 hp (321 kW / 436 PS) and 570 lb-ft (773 Nm) of torque in the pickup.
The hybrid powertrain allows the F-150 to return to the city 25 mpg, highway 26 mpg, and a combined 25 mpg.
What it can do in Expedition and Navigator remains a mystery, but Expedition 2021 maximizes city speeds of 17 mpg, highway 23 mpg, and 19 mpg combined.
2022 Expedition Specs and New Looks

The technology in Ford Expeditions seems a little out of date with the Sync 3 system, but it won’t be for long with the new refresh to come.

2022 Expedition Spyshot
The updated Ford Expedition has been spotted on public roads again. This time around, we have a photo of the spy showing off the new technology-centered interior with a limited cover.
They confirmed some details about Ford’s freshman haulers expected to submit in time to the 2022 model year and take the fight to GM’s redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban.
While the exterior camo suggests we can expect some updated styling elements for the 2022 Expedition, the real news here is the interior.
While the previous photos gave us some clues as to what’s in store for Ford, this is our first fine look at the large vertical infotainment screen that sits front and center on the Expeditions dashboard.
The photos we saw earlier had hinted at this update, but given the somewhat complex nature of the early highway prototypes, we’re not entirely sure if we saw the built-in gear of the redesigned cabin or just some sort of diagnostic/testing kit just used for development goals.
This time, it’s pretty clear that we’re looking at a new, very interesting design of the Ford Mustang Mach-E electric car.
As you can see, Expeditions will directly lift the Mach-E center screen (top left), which offers a much larger and more dominant infotainment screen than anything found on Ford at this time, such as the Explorer pictured here (top right).
The rest of the dashboard is more of a deviation from Mach-E, with the center coming out to fill the screen, rather than a floating screen in front of it.
There’s also a thick center console that joins the center stack.
Just as importantly, it also marks a shift in Ford’s interior planning for the Expedition, which has traditionally taken almost the entire front seat area of the Ford F-150.
No longer. This configuration is very different from the cabin photos we saw from the redesigned Ford pickup due for release later this year.
Ford obviously has a lot of work to do on this interior, as even some of the panels installed are missing or unfinished.
For example, the note at the top of the dashboard indicates that it is not yet grained/textured, meaning that surface treatment cannot be expected of the finished part.

The current Ford Expedition is the number one SUV you can buy even though it feels a little dated compared to rivals like the recently refurbished Chevy Tahoe.

It pumps out 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. Also, in the F-150, it gets an EPA estimate of 25 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.
We’ll have to wait a little longer to learn more about the new Expedition. The release date and pricing information are yet to be released. Expedition 2022 may be the next model to debut after the 2021 Ford Raptor is out soon.
